June 1 - November 30 is the Hurricane Season, however, prior to that Whales migrating from the North Atlantic are sometimes seen in the waters around the Virgin Islands (roughly December through March). The humpback whale being the most popular. Educational whale watching excursions are typically announced by environmental groups a few weeks prior to their intended outing. Such tours are most popular around February-March. There is so much to do and see on St. Thomas, explore your options and decide which you will most enjoy! It's a scuba diver's paradise. There are some pretty famous excursions not to miss.

The major indigenous form of music is the scratch band (also called fungi band), which use improvised instruments like gourds and washboards to make a kind of music called quelbe. A Virgin Island folk song called cariso is also popular, as well as St. Thomas' bamboula. The quadrille is the traditional folk dance of the islands. The Heritage Dancers are a respected dance troupe that perform traditional folk dances from the Virgin Islands and beyond. The Reichhold Center for the Performing Arts on St. Thomas often holds quelbe and other musical festivals, as do many other venues. Many hotel and bar bands also feature steel drum and reggae performances. You can find out where and when your favourite live music style is played in the local tourist materials found just about everywhere. I greatly prefer the steel drums. It really doesn't get any more Caribbean than that!

Have you ever thought of sea kayaking? It's one of the best ways to take in the spectacular beauty of the Virgin Islands. This environmentally friendly mode of travel offers a view of the islands that you cannot get from the shore. With several options to choose from, there is a sea kayaking adventure for almost everyone. Although most equipment is provided by your guide service, you may want to bring along the following:

Personal Clothing – shorts, t-shirts, water shoes or old tennis shoes
Sunscreen – Make sure its waterproof and sweatproof.
Sunglasses
Hat
Camera – If its not waterproof, dont take it.
Snorkel Gear – many tour places will provide this or offer it at an extra price.

This is all well and good, however, let's get to making some money. This island is shoppers paradise, because it's a duty free port. I concentrate on the jewelry, but you may decide on perfume or something else. The USVI raised its duty-free allowance to $1,600 per person. Family members traveling together can make a joint declaration that increases the amount of their allowance. Gifts valued $100 or less can be mailed (no more than one package per day) & do not need to be declared in the exemption. US visitors are allowed to return with six bottles of liquor if one of the bottles was produced locally. Duty of 6% is charged for purchases totaling more than $1,600. I buy, then I sell it for a profit. Obviously that pays for my cruise, but it gives me a profit as well! Happy Sailing!
